How We Got Started Raising Grass-Fed Cattle

How We Got Started Raising Grass-Fed Cattle

We founded Stock and Steeds out of love—my passion for horses and April’s affection for cattle. It’s this love for each other that brought it all together.

One of our earliest conversations still amazes me. April asked about the small herd of cattle I had at the time, and I thought, “What kind of girl is more interested in cattle than horses?” But it turned out she had grown up in the Twin Cities dreaming of one day living on a cattle ranch.

I spent my childhood chasing cattle on horse, caring for our steers, and savoring every ride. You couldn’t catch me and Smokie, my lifelong companion, when he was younger. And then there was Little Black, a feisty pony who loved nipping at the cows’ rear ends as we led them to the catch chute on my father’s ranch.

When April and I joined forces, we envisioned creating a sustainable farm. That’s how Stock and Steeds was born. Everyone needs to eat, and given the current state of food production in America, we aimed to provide something better—something wholesome and healthy. Our mission is to return to our cowboy roots by offering grass-fed, grass-finished beef that is holistically cared for.

At Stock and Steeds, we deeply care for our animals. We check on our herd daily, ensuring they have everything they need. At the end of the day, we find peace in winding down with them. They’re not just livestock; they’re our family.

Through this blog, we hope to connect you to the meat you purchase from us and give you a glimpse into what life on a ranch is really like—beyond the dramatics you see on television.
