Spring Cleaning at Stock and Steeds: Preparing for the New Season

It’s been a busy week here at Stock and Steeds! As winter settles in, things around the ranch tend to get a little cluttered due to unexpected events and the limited mobility that comes with the season. When it’s too slippery to get things where they belong, it’s easy for chores to pile up. We’ve been eagerly awaiting spring cleaning, though sometimes the mud is just as challenging as the ice. This week we had both!

One task we always look forward to in the spring is checking our ranch fences. Winter often brings fallen trees along the property line, and we’re always eager to ensure that our fences are in top condition for when the grass begins to grow. After all, who doesn’t love fresh, sustainable grazing for our animals?

Another important spring chore is cleaning up the pallets we use to keep our hay off the ground. This helps prevent the hay from absorbing moisture from the wet earth like a sponge, which can quickly turn the bales inedible. At times, the weight of the hay bales pushes the pallets into the ground, freezing them in place, making it a bit tricky to remove them from the frozen earth. But this is a necessary step in keeping the hay fresh and dry for the animals.

There’s always something that needs to be done on a ranch, but we enjoy having busy hands. After all, if it wasn’t worth doing, we wouldn’t be doing it! Whether it’s preparing our pastures for grazing or maintaining our ranch equipment, we stay committed to ensuring everything is ready for the new season.

As we get closer to spring, we can’t wait for the warmer days and the chance to watch the grass grow. But for now, we’ll continue with our spring chores, knowing that the hard work will pay off.

Savor, Flourish, Enjoy the Ride — and don’t forget to close the gate!
